Finding a place to live in a tight market
The rental market — especially in big cities — is competitive. Start early, be ready to act within hours, and have your documents prepared.
Where to look
- Pararius and Huurwoningen for private rentals (Pararius has an English site).
- Kamernet for rooms and shared housing.
- HousingAnywhere for mid-term, internationally-friendly rentals.
- WoningNet to register for social (subsidised) housing — expect long waiting lists.
- Funda is mainly for buying.
Be ready
- Have ID, proof of income/employer letter and references on hand.
- Confirm you're allowed to register (inschrijven) at the address.
- Lower rents may qualify for huurtoeslag (rent benefit).
Tip: Never pay a deposit before viewing the place and signing a real contract — see next month's post on scams.
