Opening a Dutch bank account (and why you need one)
You'll need a Dutch bank account for your salary, rent, and iDEAL — the payment method used across Dutch webshops. Many places are also card-only, so a local debit card matters.
Your options
- Traditional banks: ABN AMRO, ING and Rabobank — solid, with English-language service.
- App-based: bunq and Revolut are quick to open, often before your BSN is final.
- You'll usually need your BSN, ID and proof of address; some app banks let you start sooner.
Tip: Set up iDEAL and a Maestro/debit card early — credit cards are far less common here than in many countries.
