Taxes for newcomers and the 30% ruling
Income tax is handled by the Belastingdienst (tax office). Your annual return (aangifte inkomstenbelasting) is generally due by 1 May, filed online with your DigiD.
The 30% ruling
Skilled migrants recruited from abroad may qualify for a tax advantage known as the 30% ruling, which makes part of your salary tax-free. The exact percentage and conditions have been changing in recent years, so check the current rules and whether your employer applies for it on your behalf.
Good to know
- Your employer withholds wage tax monthly, so your annual return often results in a refund or small bill.
- For anything complex, a tax adviser (belastingadviseur) is worth it — especially in your first year.
Tip: Mark 1 May in your calendar and keep documents (payslips, allowances, bank statements) in one place.
