Cost of living and smart money habits

What a real month costs here — and how to keep it manageable.

The Netherlands isn't cheap, but with a few habits it's very livable. Rough monthly guides (they vary a lot by city):

  • Room: €600–900 · 1-bed apartment: €1,200–1,800+
  • Health insurance: ~€140 per adult
  • Groceries: €250–350 · Transport: €60–120
  • Phone + internet: €40–70

Money habits

  • Pay with PIN/contactless and iDEAL; tipping is modest (rounding up).
  • Compare energy and internet on Pricewise/Overstappen and switch when deals beat your renewal.
  • Claim any allowances you're entitled to.

Tip: Build a small buffer for the eigen risico (health own-risk) and the annual energy settlement — both can land as one-off bills.
