The weather, and how locals beat the rain

Mild, wet and windy — dressing right (and checking Buienradar) makes all the difference.

Dutch weather is changeable: mild temperatures, frequent rain and a lot of wind. You'll adapt quickly with a few habits.

  • Check Buienradar before you cycle — it predicts rain down to the minute.
  • A good waterproof jacket beats an umbrella in the wind.
  • Layers work better than heavy coats; the weather can shift through the day.
  • Bike with proper lights and mudguards for wet evenings.

Tip: Locals cycle in almost any weather. A dry jacket, gloves and a hood, and you'll barely notice the drizzle.
