Do you need to learn Dutch? (And how to start)

You can get by in English — but a little Dutch opens doors. Here's a realistic plan.

English is widely spoken, and many internationals work entirely in English. But learning some Dutch helps with paperwork, neighbours, and truly feeling at home — and some residents are required to pass the inburgering (civic integration) exam.

Ways to start

  • Duolingo for free daily basics.
  • NT2 courses and exams for structured, recognised learning.
  • Local language cafés and community classes to practise speaking.
  • Switch small daily moments — greetings, shopping — into Dutch.

Tip: Dutch people often switch to English to help you. Politely keep going in Dutch when you can — most will happily play along.
