That official letter in Dutch — what to do

A letter from the gemeente, Belastingdienst or IND can be stressful. Here's a calm approach.

Sooner or later a formal letter arrives in dense Dutch from the gemeente, Belastingdienst or IND. Don't panic, and don't ignore it.

A calm checklist

  • Translate the meaning, not just the words — what does it want from you?
  • Find the deadline (often a "reageer voor" date) and act in time.
  • Check the sender and any portal — log in via the official site, not a link, with your DigiD.
  • Keep a copy and note what you did and when.

If it involves residency (IND), tax disputes or anything legal, get proper advice rather than guessing.

Tip: Most letters just ask for one action by one date. Identify that action first, and the stress drops fast.

Rules change. This post was accurate when written; check the official source it links before you act.
