That official letter in Dutch — what to do
Sooner or later a formal letter arrives in dense Dutch from the gemeente, Belastingdienst or IND. Don't panic, and don't ignore it.
A calm checklist
- Translate the meaning, not just the words — what does it want from you?
- Find the deadline (often a "reageer voor" date) and act in time.
- Check the sender and any portal — log in via the official site, not a link, with your DigiD.
- Keep a copy and note what you did and when.
If it involves residency (IND), tax disputes or anything legal, get proper advice rather than guessing.
Tip: Most letters just ask for one action by one date. Identify that action first, and the stress drops fast.
