Allowances (toeslagen): money you might be owed
The Netherlands offers income-based allowances (toeslagen) to help with everyday costs. Many newcomers qualify and don't realise it.
The main ones
- Zorgtoeslag — help with your health-insurance premium.
- Huurtoeslag — help with rent (for eligible, lower rents).
- Kinderopvangtoeslag — childcare costs.
- Kindgebonden budget — extra support for families with children.
Apply and manage everything online at the Belastingdienst/Toeslagen portal with your DigiD. Allowances are based on your income, so they may be adjusted at year-end.
Tip: Apply as soon as you're eligible — some allowances can be backdated, but don't count on it. Keep your income details up to date to avoid having to pay money back.
